Taking a Stand against Racism through Books

BY JEWELEAN MAGEE

Every time an African American watches the news, reads the papers, or logs onto social media and sees Afri can American issues. This time Pres. Trump struck another blow at trying to erase our his tory, by saying African Americans had no suc cess, no brightness, and no future among other things. He has ordered African American muse ums to take down any references to slavery.

Pres. Trump so far has called for books about African American sub jects to be taken off the shelves of schools and libraries. However, the Johnetta R. Cole Am vets Post book lending library is fighting back by putting books by black authors, both fic tion and nonfiction in the hands of children, young adults, and adults in the community. “It is important to stand up and tell our children and young adults who we are, where we came from, the hardships that we endured and still do endure, and African Americans have a lot to be proud of.” Said Mr. Jerry Bowman, post member and founder of the book lending library.

There is a need for books written by James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Maya Angelou, and Donald Goines and many more Black authors. “Kids need to read autobiographies about Malcolm X, Mar tin Luther King, Fannie Lou Hamer and Rev. Jesse Jackson (Rainbow Push) other people of the civil rights move ment. The times are changing and as a com munity, we cannot let this happen.
