Buffalo Mayor Scanlon Announces Departure of DPW Commissioner; Appoints Deputy Commissioner Nolan Skipper as Acting DPW Commissioner

Buffalo, NY – Buffalo Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon announced that Department of Public Works Commissioner Nate Marton will be departing city government. Commissioner Marton was approached by his future employer a few months ago, and subsequent discussions led to his decision to pursue a new opportunity.

Buffalo Mayor Chris topher P. Scanlon said: “After nearly three years of service with the City of Buffalo, I want to extend my sincere thanks and best wishes to Department of Public Works Commissioner Nate Marton as he transitions into the next chapter of his career.

Commissioner Marton joined the city in late 2022 under the previous administration and was immediately tested by the historic Blizzard of 2022.

Since then, he has led the Department of Public Works through numerous challenges— from major snowstorms and high wind events to once-in-a-generation infrastructure projects, critical investments in our parks and city fleet, and even a rare tornado. Through it all, he has demonstrated a deep commitment to the residents of Buffalo and to the success of our city.

In the interim, I am appointing City Engi neer Nolan Skipper to serve as Acting Com missioner of the Depart ment of Public Works. I have full confidence in his leadership and in the continued strength of the department as we move forward.”

DPW Commissioner Nate Marton said, “Looking back over the past 2 ½ years, it has been a privilege to serve the residents of the City of Buffalo and lead the women and men of the Department of Public Works. I extend my sincerest thanks to Mayor Brown and Mayor Scanlon for the opportunity to serve this com munity and for their steadfast support of me as Commissioner as we collaborated to move the city forward with projects to improve our parks, roadways, facilities, infrastructure and services and fought our way through historic storms and extreme weather events.

Although I am leaving city government, I am proud of the work that has been accomplished during my tenure and extend my thanks to all of the Department and city-wide team mem bers for their efforts every day for our residents. I look forward to watching the progress continue.”

Acting DPW Commis sioner Nolan Skipper said, “I want to thank Mayor Scanlon for this opportunity and his trust in me to lead the Department of Public Works. My experience working in the city for more than 15 years, with the last five as Deputy Commissioner and City Engineer, has provided me the foundation to take on this role. As a lifelong Buffalonian, I am committed to leading this Department into the future.”
