A Historic Promotion on the Buffalo Fire Department

Captain Marlena Edwards

It is with great pride that I announce the historic promotion of Ms. Marlena Edwards to the rank of captain, making her the first African American woman to hold that rank in the history of the Buffalo Fire Department.

Captain Edwards joined the department in 2016. Early in her career, she was stationed at Engine 3 on Broadway, one of the busiest firehouses in the city. In 2023, she was promoted to lieutenant, becoming the department’s second Black female officer.

Now, she has reached another milestone in a demanding, male dominated profession. As a retired member of the BFD, I fully appreciate how historic this is. Congratulations, Captain Edwards!
