Buffalo Sewer Authority Starts Fruit Belt Neighborhood Sewer Project
Buffalo Sewer to renew 100+ year old fruit belt sewer infrastructure
BUFFALO, NY—The Buffalo Sewer Authority (Buffalo Sewer) has start ed construction on the Fruit Belt Neighborhood Sewer Improvement Proj ect. While not officially part of the Queen City Clean Waters Initiative, this project demonstrates Buffalo Sewer’s ongoing commitment to the City of Buffalo and the maintenance of its aging waste water and stormwater infrastructure.
Most of the Fruit Belt’s sewers are over 100 years old, as are many of the private lateral connec tions between houses and the public sewer line. Additionally, throughout the Fruit Belt, numerous abandoned homes have been demolished in recent decades, with the connections between the former homes and the public sewer left in place to continue to crumble. The updated infrastructure will combat sink holes and soil movement throughout the area. Construction started in November 2025 and will finish by Summer 2026.
The site work will include pipe cleaning and video inspections, repairs to existing sewers, replacement of private and public sewer lines, and installation of new sewer lines. BSA will be utilizing ultraviolet cured-in-place pipe technology, which does not require old pipes to be dug up, minimizing invasive disruption of walk ways and roads, and the odors that other cured in-place technologies can cause.
“A key component of Buffalo Sewer’s ongoing mission is updating and improving the sewer infrastructure in neigh borhoods that have been neglected for decades,” said Rosaleen B. Nogle, PE, BCEE, BC.WRE, Principal Sanitary Engineer, Buffalo Sewer Authority. “We are especially proud to be able to use ultraviolet cured-in-place pipe technology to line rather than replace old pipes to create renewed infra structure with minimized impacts on our neighbors.”
Residents may experience partial road closures, sidewalk closures, limited street parking, and possible intermit tent detours due to the construction, which is expected to be fully completed by next summer.
