Building a More Resilient Buffalo

In 2022, the Buffalo community experienced a devastating winter storm that claimed 47 lives and showed us just how quickly an emergency can impact our neighbors. We also learned an important lesson: being prepared matters, no matter what the emergency may be.

That’s why United Way of Buffalo & Erie County decided that part of our work needed to have a focus on community resiliency. Since then, we’ve responded to community needs in a variety of ways from partnering with Erie County to create and distribute 14,000 emergency kits to using unrestricted dollars to support our community when food and gas money was spent during the government shutdown.

Building on that work, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County received a $250,000 grant from Verizon and United Way Worldwide to create more than 3,800 Disaster Resilience Kits, which will be distributed to community members through preparedness workshops across Erie County.

“We are grateful to United Way Worldwide and Verizon for providing us with the resources to continue to meet the needs of our community. At United Way of Buffalo & Erie County, our team works tirelessly to ensure we deliver all that we can to our friends, families and neighbors.”

-Trina Burruss, President & CEO, United Way of Buffalo & Erie County

From preparing for the next storm to helping families navigate an unexpected hardship, United Way is taking a comprehensive approach to building resilience.

Because resilience isn’t just about getting through a crisis. It’s about making sure our neighbors have the resources and support they need to be ready before, during and long after one.
