“Putting the Neighbor back in the Hood” 29th Annual Community Walk
By Imam Fajri Ansari -Masjid NuMan
On Saturday August 9th, 2025, Masjid NuMan will be hosting our 29th Annual “Putting the Neighbor back in the Hood” community walk. The walk will begin at the corner of Woodlawn and Fillmore Ave at 11am and continue along Fillmore Ave to MLK Park. Activities will take place from 12 noon until 5pm. Food will be provided for participants in the walk, children games and live entertainment by Jomo Akono African drummers and Larry Salters E. The Roots Band.
The main purpose of this event is to provide our neighbors with viable information and to connect people with resources that can improve their quality of life. We have commitments from several organizations who will have information booths and people on hand to assist in many of the common areas of concern with residents. We are living in challenging times that have historically required families to collectively come together to meet all challenges.
Several decades ago, before his passing Imam W. Deen Mohhamed the son of the Honorable Elijah and Clara Mohammed challenged his supporters throughout the country to help build model communities. Being neighborly and building family communities as opposed to negative connotations connected with the term “hood” is a part of faith and duty. It also was the driving force in establishing the theme “Putting the Neighbor back in the Hood.”
Last year was the first time making PNBIH a city-wide event. We will continue to do so this year as we acknowledge and present awards to several unsung community servants throughout the various city council districts.
We invite all neighbors to come walk and share with us on this annual occasion. We hope that you will come to network and enjoy each other’s company. Everyone has a story and useful information to share!
