From the Turntables to the Stovetop: A Buffalo Native's Remarkable Journey as a DJ and Chef By

In the bustling heart of Buffalo, New York, where the rhythmic pulse of house music and the tantalizing aromas of sizzling dishes intertwine, one man has carved out a truly remarkable path. Greg Howze, known to many as the skilled "DJ Twist," has seamlessly blended his passions for culinary arts and music, creating a legacy that is as unique as the city he calls home.

As a lifelong resident of the Queen City, Howze's roots run deep, shaping his distinct approach to both his professional and personal endeavors. "I grew up on the East Side, in the Delavan area," he reflects, "but my father moved us to Amherst in 1991. It's been a rocky journey, but we're making it happen."

Howze's journey into the world of DJing began almost by chance. While out at a local club, he was captivated by the music the DJ was playing and a spark of inspiration ignited within him. "I was listening to the music and thought, “I could do that better,'" he recalls. With the unwavering support of a friend who gifted him his first set of turntables, Howze embarked on a 24-year career as a sought-after house music DJ, gracing stages across the Northeast and beyond.

The foundation for Howze's musical prowess, however, was laid much earlier, thanks to his father's extensive record collection. "My father entrusted me with a refrigerator (sized) box full of records – everything from Confunkshun to the Commodores," he explains. "That combination of classic soul and his trust in me, laid the groundwork for my DJ journey."

However, Howze's story is not without its challenges. As a Black man navigating the often turbulent waters of the entertainment industry, he has faced his fair share of obstacles. "There's some crying nights, you know, there's some nights where giving up is on my mind," he admits. Yet, it is his unwavering determination and the unconditional love of his 10-year-old son, Isaiah that have kept him resilient.

"Every time I want to give up, every time I want to stop, every time I want to not keep moving forward, I think about him," Howze shares. "Watching the wonder in his eyes as I cook, or teach him new skills, reminds me that I can't slow down. I've got to raise him up and he can't see me slow down."

This paternal drive, coupled with a steadfast commitment to his mental health, has been the foundation of Howze's success. "Prayer, meditation, self-reflecting, and understanding that nobody owes me anything – that's what keeps me going," he explains. "I can't let anyone bring me down. I leave that stuff at the door."

As he continues to navigate the ever evolving landscape of the culinary and music industries, Howze remains a beacon of inspiration for aspiring DJs and chefs, alike. His advice to the next generation is simple yet profound. "Determination, mathematics, and musicality – that's the recipe for success. Find your own sound, your own style, and don't be afraid to be a trendsetter."

With his sights set on new creative ventures including acting and filmmaking, Greg Howze's story is a testament to the power of passion, resilience, and the unbreakable bond between a father and his son. In the city he calls home, this Buffalo native continues to leave an indelible mark, one beat and one dish at a time. You can catch Howze spinning at Gypsy Parlor. Also, be on the lookout for his appearances at Sunset Sundays this summer. Additionally, he'll be showcasing his acting chops in Buffalo during upcoming productions at Road Less Traveled Theater, 456 Main Street and Shea’s 710 Theater, 710 Main Street.
