NYWFP STATEMENT ON NYS BUDGET HANDSHAKE “DEAL”

NEW YORK CITY —In response to the budget handshake, New York Working Families Party (NYWFP) Director Jasmine Gripper released the following statement:

“Today's announcement demonstrates the Governor is talking to an audience of one – herself – when it comes to addressing the affordability crisis. The framework of this deal does not include much needed policy inclusions for working families who have been hit the hardest. And we know that this fight is not over; all parties involved in the budget negotiation have made it clear that revenue discussions remain open and will continue into the next few days.”

“Working New Yorkers are still struggling to get by. The cost of housing, healthcare, gas, and basic groceries are skyrocketing, 450K New Yorkers are set to lose healthcare and ICE continues to tear families apart and target our neighborhoods.”

“While we are pleased to see new protections for immigrant New Yorkers included in today’s announcement, we have yet to see details on how New York will close the budget gaps of cities across the state, raise progressive revenue, or stop New Yorkers from losing their healthcare coverage.”

“We applaud leaders in the Senate and Assembly, including Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie who are continuing to stand firmly on calls to invest in our communities. We urge the legislature to hold the line and ensure a final budget includes true, meaningful investments in working families.”
