OJ Simpson has earned the right to be on the Bills Wall of Fame
by Pat Freeman, The Mighty O’Ba
One of the greatest athletes to ever put on a Buffalo Bills uniform was the late OJ Simpson. As we look forward to the opening of the new stadium here in Western New York, the current organization has been putting out online questions about whether OJ Simp son should be on the new stadium’s wall of fame. If OJ were not playing for the Bills during the early 1970’s, there would not be a professional team here in Western New York.
The late owner Ralph Wilson issued a statement which said, if the state and county did not build him a new Stadium, he would move the team to Seattle Washington. What set his tone and allowed the government to build the stadium in Orchard Park, was that they had the greatest attraction in pro football playing right here in Western New York. Not only was he the best player in the league, but he had developed a Hollywood attraction that landed him in movie roles: The Towering Inferno, Capricorn One, and the Naked gun movie series. He also became a national pitch man for Hertz rental car and Remington razors.
It was the off-field star power that helped this franchise, along with being one of the greatest players in league history. Many of his records are still in books, making him the greatest Buffalo Bill ever, and it is not even close even with the talented players of the late 1980’s and nineties. The impact of OJ Simp son, the athlete, is being mixed in with his off field issues, crimes which he was found not guilty. His later arrest was set up by a law enforcement sting operation, which finally landed him in prison, on a bogus kid napping charge, designed to finally put him behind bars.
This organization decides not to put OJ Simpson on the wall of Fame; it will once again show that Terry Pegula has no clue of the history of this area, prior to him buying the Sabres in 2011.
