A Tribute to Evelyn “Patti” Merriweather-Ferguson

Evelyn Merriweather-Ferguson

This Columnist would like to express my condolences and prayers to the Merriweather family in the loss of their loved one, Evelyn “Patti” Merriweather Ferguson. She was a beautiful, cherished woman, who worked tirelessly in helping to make sure that the Criterion newspaper was published each week. Patti as she was affectionately called, was the Executive Editor of the Criterion.

She was more than that, she was always friendly, soft-spoken, respectful to all who met her, consistently monitoring the Criterion, and making sure that it remained a part of our community and carrying on the tradition of the Merriweather family, as a Powerful Voice for the African American community.

In the year 2012, I was honored to present her with the Roses for Outstanding Woman Award. The Roses Award is presented each year to women in our community, who made a difference in our community in a variety of areas. It was always a red rose. The following words appeared on the front of the program booklet, “Roses are known for their great beauty.”

They have a special place in our lives. Roses come in many colors, but the Red Rose stands out from the others. All the women honored are like these special flowers. They stand out in our community and touch many lives in so many ways.

I communicated with Patti numerous times. I will miss her greatly. Speaking to her on the phone when I sent my articles to the Criterion. Evelyn Patti Merriweather-Ferguson always warmly greeted the Criterion readers, staff, and community members. May she rest in Peace among the angels of Heaven!! My Honor and Respect to her always!!!

“Patti” is survived by her husband of 44 years, Albert Ferguson; her two sons, Brian Ferguson and Jeremy Ferguson. Additionally, her siblings, Frances Gist, Frank E. Merriweather III, and Bruce Merriweather. Also, she has numerous nieces and nephews. Service will be held on November 3, 2025, at Holy Temple C.O.G.I.C, located at 572 Clinton St. The wake will be held at 11:00 a.m. and the funeral will be held at 12 noon.
