Earth Day 2026 Events Were
Earth Day was celebrated on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. I didn’t want to miss writing about it because I have always observed it in the classroom and in my column. In order for students to learn about it, I have sponsored several essay contests. It is an annual observance that began in 1970. There were events throughout the country and the world to highlight the need to engage in activities to save our planet. There have been teach-ins and speakers and various events to call attention to this important day.
The sponsors have included The Nature Conservancy, the American Advancement of Science, Defenders of Wildlife, the National Audubon Society and other groups. The press release states the following: “This year’s theme for Earth Day this year was “Our Power, Our Planet,” Earth Day is a Global Event designed to raise awareness of the need to save and protect our planet. Th recent Artemis II trip around the moon with four astronauts gave us a picture of how the earth is so important. The astronauts spoke about the beauty of it and the need to appreciate it Their trip around the moon was a tremendous accomplishment. We must salute the diversity of the Artemis II Crew!
According to the press release the Earth Day Network’s mission is to diversify, educate, and activate the environmental movement worldwide. Billions of people now participate in Earth Day activities each year. This columnist hopes that this national event will also deal with the issue of clean water, especially in Flint, Michigan and other locations where there are still problems. The changing weather has left many communities struggling for repair as a result of devastating storms and fires. The residents there do not feel that the problems are over and they continue to rally for clean water.
This is something that all citizens must be concerned about because water is life. You can go a few days without food, but you can’t live without water for a prolonged period of time. The fight for clean water is a concern for people all around the world. Locally there were a number of family friendly events held and cleanup programs that involved area students, Planting of trees was a priority because we have lost many trees due to severe storms and blizzards.
It is never too late to observe Earth Day. The first Earth Day was celebrated on April 22, 1970, by Senator Gaylord Nelson after witnessing the tremendous Oil Spill in 1969 Santa Oil Spill that caused widespread pollution. Earth Day reminds us of our collective responsibility to work together to save our planet for current and future generations.
