My Reflections on Election 2025

I would like to congratulate the winners of the election on Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Sean Ryan will be the Mayor of Buffalo winning against two candidates, Republican James Garner and Independent Candidate Michael Gainer. The Democratic Party had a good night locally and nationally. Mayor-Elect Sean Ryan spoke at his victory celebration and thanked his supporters. He noted that there will be challenges going forward as his takes over as Mayor of Buffalo. He said that he is up to the challenges with a plan to tackle the basic problems for Buffalo.

He pointed out developing vacant land, the pothole problem and the removal of snow. His plan includes revitalizing community centers, focusing on homelessness, and making sure our pools are open. He plans to develop in every area of Buffalo. As a State Senator, Sean Ryan has a lot of experience and people behind him. I wish him well as he carries out his plan. Congratulations also to Tiffany Lewis who was the first African American elected to the Council in Cheektowaga.

The other news for the election of 2025 is that Zohran Mamdani won the race for Mayor in New York city. He is 34 years old and comes from immigrant roots to become Mayor in one of the most historic races in this country. He was born in Africa and the first Muslim to lead a city. A former State Assemblyman he ran as a Democratic Socialist winning against former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa. This was one of the most watched races in America. Mamdani spoke with passion as he thanked his supporters and gave an overview of his plans which include free bus rides and a number of plans that will connect with the citizens. He promised to include all cultures and neighborhoods.

I want to recognize and congratulate Betty Jean Grant for her steadfast commitment to our community. Although she did not win her campaign for Erie County Legislator. She has been a constant reminder of the problems that we face in our community. She has had roles in a variety of political areas. As a businesswoman, along with her husband George Grant she owns one of the last Black Deli stores in Buffalo. She has served as a representative for the University District, a member of the Buffalo Board of Education, a Common Council member. She ran for Mayor of Buffalo with integrity. As a member of the Board of Education, Mrs. Grant supported my program in teaching African American history in the public schools.

She also was a supporter and advisor to me when I ran for Lt. Governor of New York State. She honored me as Citizen of the Year (twice) in the Erie County Legislature. She is also a poet and author of a book called “Fallen through the Cracks. Mrs. Grant writes on a regular basis for the Criterion newspaper. Many blessings to Betty Jean Grant in all of her future endeavors.
