The Winners of the Romeo Doyle Muhammad Scholarship
The 16th Annual Romeo Doyle Muhammad Scholarship presentation will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at the Frank E. Merriweather Library located at 1324 Jefferson Avenue beginning at 2 p.m. The public are invited to attend, and admission is free. This columnist created this scholarship in memory of my Late husband Romeo Doyle Muhammad, who was a combat Veteran of the Korean War and served with dignity and honor.
He was an advocate of education, always telling young people to stay in school and get a good education. The students will receive certificates of achievement and a check to help them with their college expenses. I have organized numerous programs over the years. This one is my favorite— to be able to help young people as they go on to college in the fall.
The scholarship winners: Talvin Tyson Jackson (will graduate from Burgard High School and attend Villa Maria University in the fall); Harmony Rae Laster (will graduate from Buffalo Seminary in the STEM program and enrolled at Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland); Jaeden Phillipa (will graduate from Canisius Highschool and will attend Loyola University in Maryland).
The students had to write an essay describing their career goals. They will read their essays during the program. The essay is a mandatory part of the program, and each student had to submit references, their report cards and a letter showing acceptance to their college.
I would like to thank Veronica Golden for support of this program. Veronica is a Social Worker and works with students to encourage them to achieve. Veronica also encourages students to enter the Eye On History essay contests. I would like to thank the following people who donated to scholarship: Dr. Ellen Grant (a health professional who works for the community outreach center at Roswell and educates our community on health issues); Deacon Judson Price (First Shiloh Baptist Church who supports the scholarship each year). Paulette Woods (Board of Education member who is retiring from the Central District); Sandy White (Filmmaker and media personality); and Pastor Dwayne Jones (Mt. Aaron Baptist). Congratulations to these students for their outstanding work!!
