As a nation, we are liv ing in a time of tremendous change and uncertainty. The fight for truth, jus tice and our democracy is underway. We are chal lenged daily with what and how we see, and, therefore, hear and experience. Caring for our health—mentally, physically, and spiritually— is of utmost importance. We need to fuel our bodies with foods that will give us strength for this journey.

For years, nutritionists have been advocating a plant-forward diet, focused on incorporating more beans and legumes along with lean proteins such as chicken, turkey and pork, with fruits & vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat dairy products to rounding out our diets. Ultra processed foods such as chips, sweets, snacks, sugary sodas and prepackaged/frozen meals to be consumed in moderation. It was recommended to limit intake of salt and include healthy fats-such as olive or vegetable oil. The risk of heart disease, diabetes, kidney disease, high blood pressure and stroke is prevalent in our community. As healthcare and food costs continue to rise, we need to focus on maintaining and improving our own health as well as the health of our children and grandchildren. On January 8, 2026, The Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy announced the new USDA (United States Department of Agriculture) 2025-2030 Dietary Guidelines.

At the top of the new inverted Pyramid is the focus on more animal protein (red meat) and full-fat dairy (whole milk). As I mentioned, previous Food Pyramids have emphasized a more plant-forward approach to diet and less red meat and full fat dairy. Adding more red meat and full-fat dairy prod ucts can contribute to increases to the diseases we are prone to develop! Also, minimizing the importance of whole grains (at the bottom) is notable, which provide good sources of fiber essential to the diet. The new chart continues to advocate less sugar and ultra-processed foods.

Also, it is important to be aware that these new guidelines are part of the government’s efforts to overhaul federal nutrition policy, which includes food served in hospitals, prisons, military bases, school lunch programs, as well as federal assistance programs. This pyramid will also provide a boost to the beef and dairy industries. Food plays a significant role in politics and history, as well as our health.

What we eat is important for our future, and it is our responsibility as consumers to stay aware and vigilant. As I am writing this to YOU...I am looking in the mirror too!
