Alzheimer’s Association and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity to Host Men’s Caregiver Recognition Event in Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Alzheimer’s Association West ern New York Chapter, in collaboration with Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated – Phi Omega Chapter, will host a Men’s Caregiver Recognition Event on Saturday, June 20, from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Johnnie B. Wiley Pavilion, 1100 Jefferson Avenue, Buffalo.

Held in recognition of Alzheimer’s & Brain Aware ness Month and National Men’s Health Month, both held in June, the event will honor and celebrate 10 male caregiv ers who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment, compassion and dedication while caring for loved ones impacted by Alzheimer’s dis ease and dementia. The com munity brunch and recognition program seeks to shine a light on the often-overlooked role men play as caregivers, advocates and support systems within families and communities.

According to Alzheimer’s Association Program Manager Yessica Amezquita, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia disproportionately impact women and communities of color, particularly African American and Hispanic populations. However, male care givers are frequently the individuals navigating healthcare systems, coordinating services and advocating for their loved ones. “This event serves as an opportunity to recognize the men who have stepped up and devoted their time, love, and compassion to caregiving,” said Amezquita.

Community leader and social action chair for Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated – Phi Omega Chapter, Brother Anthony Sheppard emphasized the importance of building awareness and trusted partnerships surrounding brain health and caregiving support.

“Much of my work focuses on community engagement, public awareness, and build ing trusted partnerships that directly address disparities impacting Black and Brown communities,” said Sheppard. “Partnering with the Alzheimer’s Association is a meaningful step in ensuring our members and the broader community are better informed, supported, and connected to critical resources. This event serves as a valuable space for awareness-building, relationship-building, and engaging individuals who may already be caregivers or may be at increased risk.”
