Summer Fun at the Frank E. Merriweather Library

The summer program for 2026 will begin on July4, 2026 through August 14, 2026, at the Frank E. Merriweather Jr. Library Branch located at 1324 Jefferson Avenue.

“Unearth a Story” is this year’s theme and gives kids form the community to learn about dinosaurs, fossils and volcanoes during the month of July. To start the summer activities off, there will be a dinosaur Tea-Rex party on June 30, 2026, from 4pm - 5:30pm. At this party, kids will play games, do crafts, and other activities in the children’s section of the library. For this event registration is required and parents can sign up for this portion of the tea party. Kids that drop in will be welcomed, however the seats, treat, and goody bags will go the registered children first. Registration for this event will begin on June 1, 2026.

Every Tuesday is “Crafternoon” starting July 7, 2026, through August 11, 2026. Kids can come during library branch hours from 1pm – 7pm in the children’s’ section of the library. The scheduled times for” Crafternoon” are as follows: July 7, 2026 – Kids will make cardboard stand-up dinosaurs. July 14, 2026 – Kids will create salt dough fossil puzzles. 21, 2026- Kids can enjoy making bubble wrap dinosaurs. On July 28, 2026- kids will look forward to create a wooly mammoth.

There are also two special events planned for July. The first one is a live show by Repco Wildlife on July 18, 2026, at 3pm. “Dig In” with Penn Dixie is the second feature on Thursday July 30, 2026, from 6:30- 7:30pm. Registration for “Dig In” registration is required for this event and will begin starting July 10, 2026.

For August 4, 2026, kids can make a 3D volcano, and on August 11, 2026, kids can make dinosaur eyes. To close out the month of August, kids can reg ister on July 27, 2026, to make homemade volcanoes from 6:30pm – 7:30pm. All summer long new features will be added also as part of the summer pro gram, such as a scavenger hunt, a new match ups in the library’s “Favorite Dinosaur Bracket’ and other new surprises.

Everyday, Monday- Friday all summer long, from 12noon – 1pm, kids can have lunch at Merriweather Library. Lunch is available for anyone 18 years or younger. All meals must be eaten at the library, and it is first come first serve. Special Saturday events will be the “Sensory Saturdays where kids can come and get hands – on experience in digging for fossils, breaking baby dinosaurs out of their eggs, and other sensory based based activi ties. This event will be July18, 2026 August 1, 2026, and August 15, 2026. This event is designed to allow kids to touch, mold, and feel the materials in the library from 4pm - 5:30pm.

Scouting is not the only organization that awards badges. Here at this library branch, kids can earn various summer achievement badges for different activities. Kids can earn badges for keeping a reading journal with time spent on reading. Reading a different variety of books. Participating in the summer program, scavenger hunt, craft days, and other special events. Completing special challenges, like voting in the favorite dinosaur bracket.
