Statement From Mayor Sean Ryan On Erie County Medical Examiner Ruling On Cause Of Death Of Mr. Shah Alam

Shah Alam

BUFFALO, N.Y. — “The findings released today by the Erie County Medical Examiner are deeply disturbing and confirm our worst fears — the actions of Customs and Border Protection directly contributed to Mr. Shah Alam’s suffering and ultimately led to his death.

Mr. Shah Alam, a blind man who didn’t speak English, was left alone in the cold at a closed Tim Hortons with no attempt made to contact his fam ily. No one should be abandoned like that. His custody was the respon sibility of Customs and Border Protection. They failed that responsibil ity. What happened here reflects a fundamental failure to treat a human being with basic dignity and care, and it demands accountability.

The federal government must fully cooper ate with New York State Attorney General Letitia James and take immediate steps to ensure a comprehensive, independent, and transparent investigation.

Our hearts are with Mr. Shah Alam’s family, who mourn this prevent able tragedy.”
