The Buffalo Bills decided after nine seasons to move on from one of the most successful coaches in the NFL, Sean McDermott whose record of 98-50 included seven straight playoff appearances, two AFC championship games, and five straight AFC east titles. He was relieved of duties on January 19, 2026. Coach McDermott put this entire football operation together nine years ago but failed to reach the Super Bowl with some good teams.

My personal viewpoint is that the NFL is such a place that we are seeing head coaches being fired with good records or the fan base demanding a change which is forcing owners into these changes. Coach McDermott will no doubt become a hot commodity on the coaching market as we speak especially about franchises that are longing for a coach with a winning record.

The circumstances that unfolded gives the impression that there was a power struggle with McDermott and Brandon Beane (General Manager of the Buffalo Bills), whom McDermott brought in, with Beane coming out the winner as President of the Football operations and General Manager. Beane now has the final say on the operations side of the football franchise.

The question is now who shall replace McDermott as head coach? This writer believes the best hire would be former defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier with the understanding that he hires Brian Daboll as offensive coordinator and heir apparent to Leslie Frazier when he is ready to step away. The reason I make this distinction is because Leslie Frazier is 66 years old and it will add stability to the franchise moving forward.
