NFL Owners are often error in coaching decisions
By Pat Freeman, The Mighty O’Ba
The one thing I have learned from covering the NFL now for 31 years is that owners often make serious mistakes in hiring and firing coaches. This fact unfor tunately does not exclude Terry Pegula, who since pur chasing the Buffalo Bills in 2014, has made two changes at head coach. We cannot forget that Doug Marrone was the head coach when the team was purchased but decided to resign rather than work with our new owner.
Former General manager Doug Whaley conducted the search after Pegula fired Rex Ryan and recommended the hiring of Sean McDermott. Terry Pegula, who recently gave Doug Whaley an extension then fired Doug him 48 hours after one of the best drafts of this current era landing 3 All Pro players from that draft.
Sean McDermott then brought in Brandon Beane to be the new general manager and began a run that many would say was remarkably successful. The problem that was becoming very apparent was that Brandon Beane was not getting the most of his first three rounds of draft picks, which eventually caught with a team that had success, but just could not get to the Super Bowl.
Many of us feel that since Sean McDermott won play off games, including this year he should have been retained, and other areas of the organization should have been addressed rather than the head coach. This deci sion could be a blessing but could also become one of the worst blunders in fran chise history, depending on who they hire as head coach. My determination leads me to the belief that the most qualified candidate is Leslie Frazier who will be coaching with the Seattle Seahawks in the Super Bowl.
